TAAL Professional Neem wood tablas are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional Sheesham, which was added to the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species list in 2017.
Neem wood is part of the mahogany family. It is harvested from a fast growing, drought resistant, heat tolerant tree that is common throughout India. These drums are made with the densest part of the Neem tree - the root wood. This root wood is dried for months before being cut and hollowed out into the drum shape.
This tabla / dayan measures 5 inches at the rim and will tune up nicely to E and F. Precise construction of the syahi (gob) give these drums incredible bell-like clarity. Video samples are included below --
