The quality of a shruti box is determined primarily by two traits - sustain and tuning. By the first measure, this box is phenomenal. It sustains long, even tones easily. And by the second measure, our tuning process ensures you'll get just what you need in terms of perfect tones and intervals calibrated however you choose.

Whether you're buying it for musical accompaniment, meditation, sound healing, or any other use, the MKS Concert 1 Octave Shruti Box creates the beautiful, dynamic organ tones you're desiring across a standard 13 note chromatic scale (C3 to C4) - playable in any western key. Secured in its carrying case, it's lightweight and a great, musical travel companion.

OUR TUNING PROCESS:

Our standard harmonium tuning process begins at our shop in India and ends at our U.S. location where a member of our staff - all highly trained and deeply experienced musicians - will finalize the set-up and tuning on every harmonium we sell. You won't find a more thorough refinement process anywhere.

Equal tuning - (Free): These instruments are nicely in tune to themselves, but not universally matched to any specific pitch reference. This is the typical approach taken in India. This service is recommended for anyone playing in traditional non-Western orientations or simply enjoying music independently and/or not playing in any groups.

Concert Pitch (A440 tuning) - $30: This is the best choice for most musicians, students, and those who play their instrument with others. A440 hz is the tuning standard for Western Instruments - piano, guitar, etc. Some refer to this as “Concert Pitch A440”. For this service, our expert musicians in the US will tune the instrument to correspond with the Concert Pitch standard.

Cosmic Pitch (A432 Tuning) - $60/Non-returnable:  For most customers, this service is neither practical nor recommended, but for those who are experimenting in this direction, we do offer the service on select models from our store. With this service, all reeds are drastically retuned nearly a quarter tone below standard Concert Pitch to match a middle A resonating at exactly 432 hz. While this service will not void any warranty with our store, it is not reversible. Therefore, any harmoniums or shruti boxes tuned to A432 will not be eligible for return or exchange.

An A432 hz referenced instrument will sound very out of tune when played alongside any traditionally tuned instrument. This means if you are taking a harmonium course, you will not be able to play this instrument alongside your instructor or classmates. Similarly, if you are using this instrument in a recording or performing context, you will not be able to use this unless every other instrument is also tuned to this pitch reference.

While much of India is rapidly advancing, the Indian instrument manufacturing process remains very old school. From touch ups to tuning, much of what we do at Old Delhi Music is add a layer of quality control to an otherwise non-standardized production process.

We wrote THIS ARTICLE to ensure customers understand and might appreciate this vintage production style, the unique products we carry, and how we're working to ensure genuine quality, despite the odds. It's a quick read, and definitely worthwhile for anyone considering the purchase of a traditional Indian instrument.

Thank you,
Old Delhi Music

beautiful instrument

I recently purchased this shruti after a couple attempts buying others from Etsy and eBay, and I am so pleased with it. It has a beautiful, gentle and strong tone and holds the drone well. It is just like the one my meditation teacher had that inspired me to get it. Thank you for sharing quality instruments with the world!

I'm absolutely IN LOVE

I didn't even know shruti boxes existed until a few months ago! Once I discovered them, I had to have one. I now know I made the right choice purchasing from Old Delhi Music... the 432 hz tuning is PERFECT with my crystal singing bowls! It arrived just in time for everyone in my family to enjoy it on Christmas and I am beyond happy to have this as a part of my sound healing service. Thank you for impeccable tuning and care!

Beautiful instrument, beautiful tone

This is a great instrument. I have purchased two other shruti boxes through Etsy and Amazon and the quality wasn't even close. This is a perfectly tuned instrument with a nice finish and lush tone. It's clear that Nic put great care into preparing the shipment. This shruti box is the one I've been searching for. It's a relief to have finally found a reliable source for Indian instruments. I will be back.

Thanks,
Josh

Thanks for the nice review, Josh! I'm sorry you had to have these bad experiences before finding us. I can't actually take credit for the tuning - that was either Michael, Kodie, or Jacob. In any case, they are all qualified and do great work - as you have heard.

Be well,
Nic

This is the real deal, and I love it.

I just received my shruti box, and I can't thank you enough. It is absolutely beautiful, tuned perfectly! Got it fifteen minutes ago and have already begun chanting with it and practicing my SA RE GA MA PA DA NI SA!

I have wanted a shruti for almost a decade, but kept putting it off. Partially out of laziness, but also afraid that it'd be a cheap, poorly made replica. This is the real deal, and I love it.

Thanks again,
Bob

Hi Bob - Yes. It's a great box, and we put a lot of love into the tuning. Glad you finally made the leap! -ODM
