Harmonium Tuning

OUR TUNING PROCESS:

Our standard harmonium tuning process begins at our shop in India and ends at our U.S. location where a member of our staff - all highly trained and deeply experienced musicians - will finalize the set-up and tuning on every harmonium we sell. You won't find a more thorough refinement process anywhere.

Bhava harmoniums are available with the following tuning options:

Concert Pitch (A440 tuning) - FREE: A Concert Pitch tuned harmonium will match the default tuning for Western Instruments - piano, guitar, etc. - "equal tempered" with the middle A resonating at exactly 440 hz. For this service, all reeds are retuned up and down to scale to correspond with the Concert Pitch standard. This is the best choice for most musicians and students.

Cosmic Pitch (A432 Tuning) - Add $100/Non-returnable: With this service, all reeds are drastically retuned nearly a quarter tone below standard Concert Pitch to match a middle A resonating at exactly 432 hz. For most customers, this service is neither practical or recommended, but for those who are experimenting in this direction, we do offer the service on select models from our store. While this service will not void any warranty with our store, it is not reversible. Therefore, any harmoniums or shruti boxes tuned to A432 will not be eligible for return or exchange.

An A432 hz. referenced instrument will sound very out of tune when played alongside any traditionally tuned instrument. This means if you are taking a harmonium course, you will not be able to play this instrument alongside your instructor or classmates. Similarly, if you are using this instrument in a recording or performing context, you will not be able to use this unless every other instrument is also tuned to this pitch reference.

While much of India is rapidly advancing, the Indian instrument manufacturing process remains very old school. From touch ups to tuning, much of what we do at Old Delhi Music is add a layer of quality control to an otherwise non-standardized production process.

We wrote THIS ARTICLE to ensure customers understand and might appreciate this vintage production style, the unique products we carry, and how we're working to ensure genuine quality, despite the odds. It's a quick read, and definitely worthwhile for anyone considering the purchase of a traditional Indian instrument.

Thank you,
Old Delhi Music

The Bhava studio concert teak edition is absolutely stunning. I chant and lead kirtan and this beautiful harmonium comes right through the soul when you play. Expert craftsmanship, detail and artistry. Nic and the Bhava factory have a great story - proud to play this beautiful instrument. Nothing like the sound of a harmonium...

          True love!

Where to start. I have read the other reviews and agree 100%. As a woodworker I am impressed with the quality of the craftsmanship. Not the most expensive some where in the middle. But the best sound of the other six I have. Yes I have a problem lol.

          Gorgeous sound and build!

Just got the harmonium, I am frankly stunned by the finish, woodworking .....and the sound? I asked you for an instrument with a full low-register and this beauty hits you square in the muladhara! Thank you for your kind and patient help in making this choice! META-SATISFIED!

          Oh my goodness

The Bhava Studia Harmonium/Concert Teak Edition is a real winner. The sound is impeccable, and the craftsmanship is second to none. My aspiration is to play well enough to be worthy of this fine instrument. Nic at Old Delhi is responsive and gives awesome advice. I feel well cared for. I went with this model vs the mini because I’m pretty sure I’ll never bring it on a plane, and the different in weight is not that significant to me - 25 vs 19 lbs. it is a bit more bulky, but oh my, what a quality resonance and long sustain. Expensive? That depends on what you value most. The mini is also a wonderful instrument. The difference in effectiveness is incremental, in my opinion at this point of my experience. I’m a beginner, but one that is certain of diving into Kirtan with abandon. It’s likely I’ll increasingly appreciate the quality of this harmonium over time. Plus, it’s so beautiful. I smile every time I look at it. Downside? Get yourself a shoulder strap - there’s buckles on the bag. It’s how to carry it from the car.

          Wow

Are you browsing online for a new harmonium? Make no mistake, Old Dehli Music is the place to get it if you’re looking for quality. This is the third harmonium I’ve imported to Europe from these guys, and the best one so far. I was already impressed with the travel harmonium I got a few years back, but this new studio model blew my mind. No regrets, fast delivery to Europe and no issues. I was playing it live the day after receiving it, and it was such a fantastic inspiring experience for both me and the audience.
