Harmonium Tuning

OUR TUNING PROCESS:

Our standard harmonium tuning process begins at our shop in India and ends at our U.S. location where a member of our staff - all highly trained and deeply experienced musicians - will finalize the set-up and tuning on every harmonium we sell. You won't find a more thorough refinement process anywhere.

Bhava harmoniums are available with the following tuning options:

Concert Pitch (A440 tuning) - FREE: A Concert Pitch tuned harmonium will match the default tuning for Western Instruments - piano, guitar, etc. - "equal tempered" with the middle A resonating at exactly 440 hz. For this service, all reeds are retuned up and down to scale to correspond with the Concert Pitch standard. This is the best choice for most musicians and students.

Cosmic Pitch (A432 Tuning) - Add $100/Non-returnable: With this service, all reeds are drastically retuned nearly a quarter tone below standard Concert Pitch to match a middle A resonating at exactly 432 hz. For most customers, this service is neither practical or recommended, but for those who are experimenting in this direction, we do offer the service on select models from our store. While this service will not void any warranty with our store, it is not reversible. Therefore, any harmoniums or shruti boxes tuned to A432 will not be eligible for return or exchange.

An A432 hz. referenced instrument will sound very out of tune when played alongside any traditionally tuned instrument. This means if you are taking a harmonium course, you will not be able to play this instrument alongside your instructor or classmates. Similarly, if you are using this instrument in a recording or performing context, you will not be able to use this unless every other instrument is also tuned to this pitch reference.

While much of India is rapidly advancing, the Indian instrument manufacturing process remains very old school. From touch ups to tuning, much of what we do at Old Delhi Music is add a layer of quality control to an otherwise non-standardized production process.

We wrote THIS ARTICLE to ensure customers understand and might appreciate this vintage production style, the unique products we carry, and how we're working to ensure genuine quality, despite the odds. It's a quick read, and definitely worthwhile for anyone considering the purchase of a traditional Indian instrument.

Thank you,
Old Delhi Music

          Beautiful instrument

I originally ordered the Bhava lite travel harmonium and am glad that Nic recommended the Bhava Studio Harmonium after I wasn't fully satisfied. The resonance and sound is beautiful on the Bhava Studio, and it feels really nice to play. This instrument seems like one that will last a lifetime, and I would recommend it to anyone considering the purchase!

I have been playing the harmonium for over 60 years. This concert harmonium is thd mist amazing instrument I’ve ever played.

The sound is like soft liquid nector to the ears. The bellows are wonderful and sensitive to the touch of the keys, requiring very little pumping to bring out the most beautiful full sound.

In making such a harmonium is extraordinary and I thank you all from the buttom of my heart for creating such an instrument with which to glorify the sacred mantras

Possibly the best harmonium I have yet encountered

I own three Bhava harmoniums amongst a significant collection of other high quality Indian instruments. Our kirtan circle has purchased about ten of the Bhava Mini and Classic models to date. For years I have played the Mini leading the kirtan and more recently the Classic. As the enthusiasm for these instruments has grown in our group I decided to treat myself to the best of them - the teak concert model. It arrived in Australia five days after placing the order, customised to include C# and G# drones, which are my preference to the natural key drones.
The first thing that struck me on unboxing was the extraordinary beauty of the wood. I had to pause before playing to admire the workmanship and quality. When I began playing a few chords I could not believe the depth and richness of the tone. In the week it has been here I have played it daily for hours at a stretch. It just keeps getting better. I put a Sure 57 microphone on it and played it through a Strymon Big Sky reverb pedal and it sounds like a cathedral pipe organ. Remarkable. Heirloom indeed. Thanks Nic, Kodie and the team at the workshop in India. Second to none. Well done.
