Harmonium Tuning

OUR TUNING PROCESS:

Our standard harmonium tuning process begins at our shop in India and ends at our U.S. location where a member of our staff - all highly trained and deeply experienced musicians - will finalize the set-up and tuning on every harmonium we sell. You won't find a more thorough refinement process anywhere.

Bhava harmoniums are available with the following tuning options:

Concert Pitch (A440 tuning) - FREE: A Concert Pitch tuned harmonium will match the default tuning for Western Instruments - piano, guitar, etc. - "equal tempered" with the middle A resonating at exactly 440 hz. For this service, all reeds are retuned up and down to scale to correspond with the Concert Pitch standard. This is the best choice for most musicians and students.

Cosmic Pitch (A432 Tuning) - Add $100/Non-returnable: With this service, all reeds are drastically retuned nearly a quarter tone below standard Concert Pitch to match a middle A resonating at exactly 432 hz. For most customers, this service is neither practical or recommended, but for those who are experimenting in this direction, we do offer the service on select models from our store. While this service will not void any warranty with our store, it is not reversible. Therefore, any harmoniums or shruti boxes tuned to A432 will not be eligible for return or exchange.

An A432 hz. referenced instrument will sound very out of tune when played alongside any traditionally tuned instrument. This means if you are taking a harmonium course, you will not be able to play this instrument alongside your instructor or classmates. Similarly, if you are using this instrument in a recording or performing context, you will not be able to use this unless every other instrument is also tuned to this pitch reference.

While much of India is rapidly advancing, the Indian instrument manufacturing process remains very old school. From touch ups to tuning, much of what we do at Old Delhi Music is add a layer of quality control to an otherwise non-standardized production process.

We wrote THIS ARTICLE to ensure customers understand and might appreciate this vintage production style, the unique products we carry, and how we're working to ensure genuine quality, despite the odds. It's a quick read, and definitely worthwhile for anyone considering the purchase of a traditional Indian instrument.

Thank you,
Old Delhi Music

          Exceeded Expectations

I have been aware of Old Delhi Music for a couple years. After watching their online videos, I had pretty high expectations as far as the quality and sound of a Bhava harmonium. The harmonium arrived the other day. The instrument was carefully packaged with thought and care. It arrived safely without any problems. The case that it comes with is substantially padded and well made.

The sound, is truly what amazed me. The tone, the warmth, and depth. I’m very happy that I purchased the studio model. The sustain exceeds 10 seconds with two notes being played. The instrument is perfectly tuned. There are no buzzing reeds, or any other flaw in manufacturing. I can’t overstate the quality of craftsmanship and the attention to detail. I took this to a local fold shop who does repairs of old harmoniums from time to time. They were overjoyed to see such a well engineered instrument.

Thanks to Nic and the staff in India for making such a beautiful instrument. It will serve me well in my practice. PeAcE

Sincere thanks for this generous review. I'm thrilled that we exceeded your already high expectations!! phew... ;-)

I'm glad you love the aesthetics, the tone, etc. To the best of our abilities, we try to curate the best experience possible...

In the interest of setting realistic expectations, I do feel like one element to expand upon is the issue of buzzy reeds. These occur due to natural expansion and contraction of a harmonium, and that happens in most places with changes in the weather. You can avoid some of the problems linked to expansion and contraction by taking into account humidity control. In short, the target is 50% humidity all the time, and any standard humidifier (or dehumidifier) can help you maintain these levels in the room where you keep your harmonium.

No matter how nice a harmonium is, rattling reeds will occur if the expansion or contraction becomes excessive. On our end, we certainly do our best to prep the instrument in such a way that the reeds can handle some movement, but it's unfortunately impossible for us to eliminate the possibility that a buzz might occur - even in a super high quality harmonium.

That said, if you do have a buzzy reed, fixing this is pretty simple with a 'reset.' To reset a reed, you are just taking the reed off and putting it back. When you do this, the pressure is relieved and they tend to go back straight.

We have instructions for anyone who ever has a question about that process. Hope this is helpful!

Tears streamed down my face when I played it

I already have a harmonium but something was not quite right and I then bought a Bhava Studio dark cedar. It is exquisite. The sustain is so luxuriously long that it makes a beginner sound like a pro. I bought a B-stock with cosmetic blemishes and even this one looks fantastic- the finishing is beautiful and professionally done. The keys are so highly polished they are gleaming. Not a creak from anywhere, just awesome playability and a delight to the ears. Nic and staff, you are doing such a grand job with this. I love my new Bhava, thank you so much

Perfect Harmonium for our Little Temple

We bought a smaller Bhava harmonium last year for home. We've been thoroughly impressed with the quality and sound of the instrument so we bought this one for our little temple meditation group. Being able to get the A432 tuning is a special treat. Also want to mention that Nic's videos are wonderfully helpful.
