This Sursargam "Sur Tanpura" is a combination of two Indian instruments. The first is a tanpura, which can be tuned to female or male range and is strung with common wound guitar strings. The second is a 15-string swarmandal strung with plain steel guitar strings and a variety of tuning options. Both instruments are built on the same sound box. It is fitted with all modern gear tuners for easy tuning.

Beautiful instrument!

For a while, I had been looking to expand into stringed instruments in my sound healing practice and this beautiful instrument is perfect for my needs. As luck would have it, there happened to be a B-stock instrument available on this site at the time I was looking and to be honest I can't tell anywhere on the instrument that made it a B-stock, it looks and sounds perfect! My clients have had a lot of positive comments on it, I really enjoy playing this instrument. Many thanks!

Lightning Fast Delivery of an Excellent Instrument

I have been wanting to pick up a tanpura for awhile to use in bhakti chanting at our local yoga studio. Since I won't be playing Indian Classical Music, I figured a box tanpura would be more than adequate. The addition of the swarmandal was intriguing, so I decided to purchase this instrument. I had several questions before ordering, and Nic was incredibly helpful and gracious in responding to emails. I ordered this on a Thursday, and it arrived the VERY NEXT DAY!

This instrument has a beautiful rich tone and will be perfect for our chanting practice. I placed some small lengths of twin underneath the tanpura strings on the bridge, and it gets that classic "twang" resonance that is excellent for droning. I love that both tanpura and swarmandal have western style gear tuners, which make the instrument a breeze to tune and keep in tune.

Here's the tuning I used.
Tanpura, high to low: G2 - C3 - C3 - C2
Swarmandal, high to low: F E C Bb G F E C D E D C Bb A G

We do our honest best to curate a selection of instruments we feel good about, but if you don't love anything you buy from us, we don't want you to feel stuck with it. In the case you wish to exchange or return something you have purchased from us, the following policies apply (READ OUR RETURN FULL POLICY HERE)

RETURNS

Our policy lasts 14 days from the day you receive your instrument. Beyond this, unfortunately we can’t offer you a refund or exchange. To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging.

REFUNDS (if applicable)

Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund. If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within a certain amount of days.

Only standard items may be refunded. We cannot refund purchases of products that have been highly customized per customer request. This policy excludes standard tuning or tuning to A440, but includes tuning to A432 and other less common calibrations.

EXCHANGES (if applicable)

We will replace all standard items or parts if they are defective or otherwise damaged. B-stock and used instruments are not replaceable but still eligible for exchange. If you need to exchange any item, please send us an email at olddelhimusic@gmail.com .

While much of India is rapidly advancing, the Indian instrument manufacturing process remains very old school. From touch ups to tuning, much of what we do at Old Delhi Music is add a layer of quality control to an otherwise non-standardized production process.
