While much of India is rapidly advancing, the Indian instrument manufacturing process remains very old school. From touch ups to tuning, much of what we do at Old Delhi Music is add a layer of quality control to an otherwise non-standardized production process.

We wrote THIS ARTICLE to ensure customers understand and might appreciate this vintage production style, the unique products we carry, and how we're working to ensure genuine quality, despite the odds. It's a quick read, and definitely worthwhile for anyone considering the purchase of a traditional Indian instrument.

          Plays well beyond expectations

Couldn’t be more pleased. My first sitar but wow! Tunings pegs hold, action is good, tone amazing, decorative work top shelf. For the price a very playable instrument, beautifully carved and fine attention to detail.

          Simply Incredible

I had nearly given up on finding a good starter sitar until I heard about Old Dehli Music (ODM) from the youtube channel notbadfilms and their interview with ODM founder, Nic. I luckily got this sitar ordered on the day they were restocked (gone a day later)! It came shipped securely and arrived on time looking as beautiful as the pictures shown above. It sounds wonderful and plays incredibly well. I am very thankful for this instrument. Thank you again Nic and thank you Jeff (notbadfilms) for leading me to this sitar.

          Notes to potential purchasers:
The hardshell case I got was well worth the money, handles on each side and it even has wheels on the lower portion.
Mizrabs: I ordered the extra set of 10 and unfortunately only one was unusable because all the others were too small for my finger (painful and purple fingertip). Perhaps order Mizrab elsehwere or maybe email support here and request larger mizrabs if you thik your fingers are a bit thicker.

          Fantastic!

Beautiful instrument with an incredible tone and amazing resonance. Came fast and was packed securely in the box as well as the hard case, which the hard case is great too. Will definetly recommend this place for classic Indian instruments!

          Beautiful instrument

I had a sitar years ago and looked forward to having one again. This one is highly decorated compared to my old one which I bought in Malaysia. This one came in the hard shell case which will be great if I ever move again. The main strings were way out of tune, no surprise considering it shipped across the states. The sympathetic strings were close to tuned but when tuning one up
it broke where it was wound into the peg. I did not over-tighten it. Sympathetic strings look like a bear to replace so I didn't. The sound of the sitar is good and fun to play. I use my nails instead of the metal "picks" supplied as I play finger style guitar. This is a nice instrument at a reasonable price for all that you get.

Hi George - Thanks for the review! We're glad you are satisfied with the look and sound of your new sitar.

RE: Shipping - These are actually detuned for shipping intentionally.

The tension on a string instrument can increase with changes in altitude and climate. With that, industry standard is to detune ALL string instruments before shipment. If you miss this, the results are bad - broken tuners, or worse...

We provide a tuning guide and extra strings in case one breaks while you are tuning them up. Prior to shipment, we tune the strings, set the movable frets, and clean things up to ensure it is good on our end. Then, once it's tested we detune and ship.

We apologize if any of this was a surprise, and I'm sorry to hear a string broke when you were tuning it up. If you have any questions about how to install a new sympathetic string, please be in touch.
